Inscription of the Rosetta Stone |
Inscribed in 196 BC, the Rosetta Stone represents a simple but very effective "technology" that revolutionized the knowledge about Egypt after its discovery in 1799 by French troops near the town of Rashid (Rosetta). It contains a message in three languages (Egyptian hieroglyphs, Egyptian demotic, and Greek) and was the key for deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs. It took Jean François Champollion 14 years before the decipherment was finally completed in 1822. It forms the basis for modern Egyptology. With its help, knowledge could be re-captured that had been lost for almost 1500 years. It can be seen as an example for how useful and important it can be to link knowledge and what potential hyperlinked text and the Web in general have. |
