The idea for it stemmed from a collection of papers published by Richard Chenevix Trench, entitled "On Some Deficiencies in Our English
Dictionary," which provoked thought into making a coherent, more unified vocabulary.
Major contributors to the Dictionary were, Herbert Coleridge, Frederick Furnivall (who founded the Early English Text Society), and William Alexander Craigie
The official title of "Oxford English Dictionary" was included on the section from "deceit" through "deject" on January 1st, 1895
The dictionary was dedicated to Queen Victoria
This first edition had 10 volumes
The first copies were presented to King George V and to Calvin Coolidge, President of the United States at the time
