1884:Waterman Patents the Fountain Pen
In
1884 Lewis Edson Waterman, a New York insurance broker, patented his new
improved pen. At the time, traditional
dip-pens and leaky reservoir-pens were available-Waterman simply improved upon
the existing reservoir pen. As an
insurance agent, Waterman allegedly destroyed a valuable contract when his ink
pen leaked and was thus inspired to invent the Waterman Fountain Pen. Waterman's innovations included air holes in
the nib of the pen and grooves inside the ink-feeding mechanism. His pens had a smooth, even flow of ink and
(with some shrewd advertising) quickly became popular items. Waterman became the larges pen manufacturer
in America and expanded, opening factories in Europe. Eventually, the ball-point pen began to replace the fountain pen. In 1958 the American branch of Waterman Pens
closed, but not before Waterman's pens had made a lasting impression on writing
instruments everywhere.
