Information Science Research Laboratory
Computing Resources

The research systems for the Information Science Research Laboratory (ISRL) are currently comprised of 15 general servers and a handful of special purpose servers. Most servers are Linux-based, single- or dual-processor servers. Several single- and dual- processor Sun Ultra class computers are also maintained. One Sun E450 quad- processor machine is available for CPU-intensive applications.Currently, there is over a half a terabyte of data storage available between these systems. A 14 tape DLT jukebox provides regular backups for the data. The systems are on a 100 Mb/s Ethernet using Category 6 wiring. They recieve a high-speed Internet through the University of Illinois. Five special purpose servers are also maintained for Community Outreach networking, (see: Prairienet.org).

A full range of Internet services are available on the ISRL servers. These include auth/auth, mail, mailing list, news, and home directory servers, as well as a variety of database management systems. Both production and experimental web servers are available.

The ISRL provides an infrastructure of state of the art Linux, Sun, and Windows workstations. A full compliment of printers, scanners, and LCD projectors are also available. The lab is located in the newly constructed wing of the Library and Information Science building at the University of Illinois. The facility not only provides lab and office space, but also a seminar room and several common areas.

Staff for the ISRL includes two full-time lines: a Manager of Systems Services and a Computer Systems Specialist. Graduate students act as Workstation Specialists and Research Programmers. This core staff maintains the general infrastructure for the facility as well as providing research and development support for the various ISRL projects. Staff members are actively involved as trainers and mentors for Graduate School of Library and Information Science and more generally University of Illinois graduate students and staff.

Logical Diagram of Resources
Below is the logical diagram of the resources available to ISRL researchers. The diagram illustrates the logical relationship between systems, including IP names used to access systems. There is not a one to one correspondance between IP names and systems, as some computers host multiple IP names.

IP Name to Server Mappings
The table below defines the working IP Name to Server Mappings for ISRL servers. Typically, the virtual names for the server, not the physical name will be used on a day to day basis. As needs change, the virtual name to physical name mappings will change, stressing the importance of using the virtual name to access resources.

NOTE: rows highlighted in yellow indicate systems to be created at a later date.

NOTE: rows highlighted in red are systems entering the retirement phase.

NOTE: griffin.canis.uiuc.edu and sabine.canis.uiuc.edu are deprecated but maintained for backward compatibility. They will be retired at some later date.

NOTE: for project virtual domains (e.g., biobrowser.org, inquiry.uiuc.edu) all email is delivered to mail.isrl.uiuc.edu (that is, their mx record is set to mail.isrl in the DNS table) and can be checked at [imap pop].isrl.uiuc.edu. Each virtual domain, when registered, will have the IP names www.virtual.dom, www2.virtual.dom, www3.virtual.dom, db.virtual.dom, soldev.virtual.dom, and lindev.virtual.dom automatically created. Others can be created on request.
