In the ISRL there are several classes of machines. These classes are enumerated below.
For dynamic addresses, one should note that the DHCP server tries to maintain the address over a reboot, but this is not guarenteed
This class of machine has dynamically configured addresses from the iworkXX.lis.uiuc.edu address pool.
This class of machine is generated from a standard image (what is referred to as a kickstart image). This class of machine is perdiodically re-imaged as necessary (not only functionality updates but security updates).
Remote access to the Linux iworkXX workstations should not be an issue as there is central file storage on shares.isrl.uiuc.edu
This class of machine has dynamically configured addresses from the iworkXX.lis.uiuc.edu adddress pool. Although remote access is not possible, there is central file server accesss when logged in locally.
This class of machine has dynamically configured addresses from the iworkXX.lis.uiuc.edu adddress pool. Since these machines are necessarily untrusted, samba mount access is password protected. NFS mount access is forbidden.
This class of machine has statically configured addresses. These machines include shares.isrl, www.isrl, lindev.isrl, et cetera.
Note that host names that start with iwork/iserve are in the lis.uiuc.edu domain. Generally, if the machine name starts with an 'i', then it's on the lis.uiuc.edu domain. Other machines are in the isrl.uiuc.edu domain (lindev.isrl.uiuc.edu, soldev.isrl.uiuc.edu, www.isrl.uiuc.edu, ldap.isrl.uiuc.edu, et cetera).
