Using the Projector Cart
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO LET THE FAN COOL THE PROJECTOR AFTER USE. THE
BULBS COST $500 FOR AN OEM REPLACEMENT BULB.
To reserve the projector cart, please refer to the document Reserving the projector cart.
These instructions cover the use of both the Linux and Windows
workstations present on the cart. Report any problems or questions
regarding the use of the cart or these instructions to
isrl-support.
It is very important to follow all the directions COMPLETELY to keep
everything synchronized and prevent any file system damage.
Turning everything on
In order to use the projector on the computer cart, follow these steps:
- Provide power to the cart. There should a single obvious
plug. You shouldn't need to provide power to the separate computers.
- Make sure that the KVM (black box on the middle shelf) is
powered. Usually you don't have to do anything with this
device.
- Connect the cart to the network. There should be a
network cable that is fairly obvious (it is a beige Sun network
cable at the time of writing). Both computers connect to
the hub on the cart. You don't need to do anything with the hub.
- Remove the lens cap from the projector. Enough said.
- Press the large power button on the projector. The projector should
beep. It may take a moment to be able to see the image from the
projector.
- Turn on both the computers. Each should beep.
- Make sure that the KVM selects the computer you want..
Windows is on selector one and Linux is on selector two.
- Use the computers :)
- Don't leave the projector on for extended periods of time when
the projector is not in use. The bulb has a finite lifetime.
Turning everything off
- Log out of the windows machine
- Wait until it says "it is safe to turn off your machine."
- When it is safe, hit the power button on the front of the
windows machine.
- Select the Linux machine from the KVM by selecting computer two.
- Log out of any XWindows session.
- Press Control-Alt-F1. A text screen and login prompt should
appear after a moment.
- Press Control-Alt-Delete. This will start a shutdown process
that won't damage files.
- Wait until the machine says to power down. Then turn the machine
off.
- Press the power button on the projector. It should project a menu
confirming that you want to shut off.
- Press the "enter" key on the projector. The lamp should go off
- WAIT FOR THE FAN TO STOP BLOWING. This could take a few minutes. If
you don't wait, you will shorten the life of the bulb.
- Once the fan has stop blowing, it is safe to remove power from the cart.
- Disconnect the network cable from the wall.
- Replace the lens cap on the projector.
