Obtaining Personalized Domains

Personalized domains are domains that end in .org. While it is technically possible to obtain domains in .com or .net, these are typically not hosted on University servers. To facilitate seemless integration of systems into the ISRL infrastructure, projects are encouraged to obtain personalized domains.

The full policies for personalized domains are covered by CITES at http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/dns/personalized-other.html. The policies listed within that document apply to all personalized domains hosted on the various LIS networks. Please be sure you have read and can comply with those policies before applying for a personalized domain. Below are highlighted details regarding application for a personalized domain to be hosted on the ISRL network.

Application of personalized domains must go through the LIS systems staff. Requests should be sent to isrl-support@isrl.uiuc.edu and should include the following information:

  1. Name of person and project requesting domain
  2. A University account number, account name and telephone number to associate with this domain. The bill will appear as an additional entry on the departmental phone bill.
  3. Requested domain.
  4. Short description of the intended use of the domain.

There is a one time charge of $150 to create the account, and a monthly charge of $7.50 to maintain the account. These costs cover the time it takes to create the accounts, to administer the entries in the DNS servers, and the time to maintain those entries and do subsequent updates to them. It also helps support running the DNS servers themselves.
