Introduction to NCSA Habanero ®

NCSA

Established in 1985 with a National Science Foundation grant, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) opened to the national research community in January 1986. NCSA is a high-performance computing and communications facility designed to server U.S. computational science and engineering communitites. Located on the campus of the University Of illlinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), NCSA is funded by the National Science Foundation, the State of Illinois, the University of Illinois, other Federal Agencies and industrial partners.

NCSA was recently chartered as the leading-edge site for the National Computational Science Alliance (Alliance). In this capacity, NCSA anchors all Alliance teams and oversees the administration of all Alliance programs. NCSA leads the Alliance in its mission to maintain American preeminence in science and technology.

Scientific Collaboration Systems

The Scientific Collaboration Systems Group (SCS) is dedicated to development of tools that will improve communication and data visualization for the Alliance community. SCS is primarily focused on developing JavaTM applications which provide this cross-platform capability. A couple of these projects include NCSA Habanero and NCSA Java3D.

NCSA Habanero

NCSA Habanero is a collaborative framework and set of applications. Using Habanero you can create and work in shared applications from remote locations over the Internet. The Habanero framework also enables developers of groupware applications to build powerful collaborative software in a reduced amount of time. Since Habanero is written in Java, it will run under any operating system that supports JDK 1.1.X. The Habanero framework, or API, provides the necessary libraries that developers can call upon to create or convert existing applications into collaborative applications. The Habanero applications consist of a client, a server and a variety of tools.

We believe collaborative technologies represent the next major break-through in communication for the Internet community and will cause a fundamental restructuring in the nature of distributed work by improving the efficiency and productivity of remote teams. The NCSA Habanero project hopes to provide the catalyst to this change by providing an initial set of useful tools and a framework so other developers can easily port existing tools and create additional collaborative applications.
