On this page you will find the installation steps required to install NCSA Habanero 2.0 on the Macintosh platform.

1. Install the VM
2. Install the Habanero files
3. Modify the user.props file
4. Move the habanero.rsc directory
5. Clean up
6. Configure your ID data in the client program

Optionally, you may configure your web browsers to launch a Habanero session from a WWW page.

1.   Install the VM:
 

• Download Apple's MRJ 2.1.1.
• Follow the instructions to install the MRJ on your particular system.

2.   Install the Habanero files

• Download NCSA Habanero 2.0 BinHex file.
• Habanero is initially downloaded as a compressed file in binhex format.  Your browser should

decompress this file for you and leave you with a folder called NCSA Habanero.


When your browser is finished decompressing the files, you will get a folder that resembles the following graphic:

Alternatively, your browser may not expand the file.  If this happens, drag-n-drop the binhex (.hqx) file onto Aladdin's StuffIt Expander(tm), and then double-click the Habanero2.0Mac.sea file to get the NCSA Habanero folder.

• Open user.props:
Open the NCSA Habanero folder, open the habanero.rsc folder, and double-click the user.props file in the habanero.rsc folder.
(Alternatively, open the file in your favorite text editor.)


 

• Edit habanero.home:
Edit the line in user.props that starts with "habanero.home=".  After the equals sign, put the path up to and including the folder where Habanero resides.

As an example, suppose your start-up disk was called Macintosh HD, and the NCSA Habanero folder sat at the top of the drive:



You would then edit the habanero.home line in user.props to read:

habanero.home=/Macintosh HD/NCSA Habanero
 

As another example, if you like your system to have a more structured (or complicated) layout as the following:



In this case, you would edit the habanero.home line to read:

habanero.home=/Sparky/Internet Apps/NCSA/NCSA Habanero
 
 

• Edit dir.record:

In a similar manner to how you modified habanero.home, edit the line starting with "dir.record=" to point to the folder where you want NCSA Habanero to save recorded session data.
For example:

dir.record=/Macintosh HD/NCSA Habanero/capture

4.  Move the habanero.rsc directory:

• In order for Habanero to work properly, you will need to move the habanero.rsc directory to the Preferences folder in your start-up disk's System Folder.

To do this, just drag-n-drop as in the following picture:

• If you have not already done so, you may delete Habanero2.0Mac.sea.hqx and Habanero2.0Mac.sea from your computer.

• At this point, you may double-click the Habanero Client icon and configure the information in your ID card.

• Share-it's ability to download and install applets on the system will not work on the Mac because all class files are in a zipped archive file. This compensates for Mac's 31 character file name limitation.  However, Share-it should allow you to share local files.
