NCSA Habanero is a client and server application written in Java and is considered platform independent, however, there are limitations to this statement. First, Habanero will only run on a platform that has support for Java Virtual Machine (VM). Second, some Habanero applications are dependent on native libraries or platform specific libraries.
As far as the VM is concerned, Habanero was developed and extensively tested using the Sun JDK, and we are confident with its performance under Solaris (Sparc & x86) and Windows (95/98 & NT). To a lesser degree we have tested Habanero on the Macintosh, SGI, and HP UNIX systems. In general Habanero will run under any operating system that has support of a Java VM. However, Habanero's performance depends on how well the Java VM was implemented for that system. More information about the various flavors of Java Virtual Machines is available from the Habanero download pages.
The other limiting factor of platform independence has to do with the use of native libraries. For example, the Habanero Audio Chat tool uses a native library convert the raw GSM sound data to the .wav format for Windows and .au for UNIX. To date the only operating systems that have the Audio Chat native libraries are Solaris and Windows. Thus, if you are in a session using an HP, SGI or Mac Habanero client the tool will appear but you will not hear the data.
A Java interpreter or virtual machine version 1.1.6 or later.
Installation details vary from platform to platform but can be summarized as follows:
